Like other industries and employers, farms are also required by legislation in Ireland (Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005) to complete portable appliance testing (PAT) at regular safety intervals. While there are not specific testing guidelines for PAT Testing for farms, their agricultural equipment and settings present additional hazards such as increased wear/usage and environmental factors like damp or dust, that may require more frequent testing.

PAT Testing Requirements for Farms

Like with PAT testing for office spaces and commercial settings, PAT testing is required for any appliance which plugs/unplugs into an electrical socket, including extension leads, tools, computers/charging equipment as well as kettles and refrigerators in shared spaces. As farms are considered high-risk environments, as a practical guideline, PAT testing on farms should be carried out every 6 to 12 months for any frequently used equipment, or equipment which is exposed to harsh conditions, or regularly moved, such as power tools, portable machinery and extension leads. However, for equipment which is stored in clean and dry environments such as office equipment or indoor tools/machinery, PAT testing at intervals of 1 to 2 years may be suggested for lower-risk appliances.

A Structured Maintenance and Testing Schedule

Considering that there is no exact fixed interval as determined by law, it is important to adhere to structured maintenance and testing schedule based on the risk profile of each appliance, which is informed by PAT testing. For example, pumps, portable tools and lighting/heating systems, pressure washers and extension leads that are used outdoors or in damp, dusty, or mechanically active environments should be tested frequently (3-6 months) due their history, susceptibility to wear, cable damage and moisture ingress, that can lead to electric shock or fire hazards if not identified and corrected early. By keeping regular scheduled PAT testing and the records provided following services, will maintain the integrity and longevity of all portable appliances and ensure safety on site. Likewise, records from routine services will also differentiate between high-risk and low-risk equipment (such as computers and office appliances) which will require different intervals for testing due to their use, purpose and environment.

Layered Approach to PAT Testing for Farms

To meet the needs of farms, layered approach to testing services is common, combining routine visual inspections and risk assessment practices (often undertaken monthly or quarterly by farm staff) with periodic PAT testing carried out by a registered electrician or certified PAT technician. As noted above, it is crucial to keep up with regular maintenance and records from PAT testing which will comprehensively list all test results, appliance lists, inspection dates, any faults found or remedial actions to be undertaken, which can be referred to for insurance or auditing purposes. As some insurers may require specific PAT testing intervals as a condition of coverage (often on farms with high machinery usage), it is important to check policy guidelines when scheduling services.
