Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is the process of inspecting testing all plug-in appliances for safe use in the workplace. Appliances requiring PAT testing would classify as any portable or common use equipment connected to the mains via electrical cord, such as kettles, microwaves computers, power tools, extension leads, chargers, printers, scanners, etc. Depending on the workplace or industry, PAT testing is recommended or required to demonstrate compliance with health and safety regulations every 6 months to 1 year for industrial or construction sites or every 2-5 years for businesses and hotels depending on the age of the equipment in addition to the volume and usage of activity on site.

PAT Testing Process

The portable appliance testing process is straightforward, with an easy three step approach: planning, testing and certification.

  1. Planning: Planning would involve risk assessments undertaken by the business according to health and safety protocols prior to contacting certified electrical providers to determine how long testing would take, in addition to possible maintenance scheduling (depending on the nature of the site).
  2. Testing: PAT Testing on sites involves visual inspections and electronic tests made by qualified electricians and technicians to check for earth continuity, insulation resistance, and functionality of appliances.
  3. Certification: Once testing is completed, the technician or electrician will prepare a detailed report and certification, noting that testing has been completed and the overall health of the system, any hazards or appliances that require repair/replacement (some repairs can be done same day, with hazardous or faulty equipment being removed immediately), and recommendations for ongoing maintenance intervals. These reports are crucial to demonstrating compliance for ongoing health and safety regulations, informing internal risk management practices and for insurance purposes.

PAT Testing Regulations

Regulations for PAT testing are informed by the guidelines within the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007, which requires employers to ensure that all portable electrical equipment is regularly maintained for use and inspected for any hazards or conditions that could cause deterioration and safety issues. While PAT testing should always be carried out by qualified and registered electricians or technicians, like those at the PAT Group, it is important to always be mindful of signs of wear or to unplug appliances when not in use to increase their longevity and decrease possible hazard risks.
